COVID-19 in Barcelona, 2020 and 2021. Pandemic Street Scenes.

Spain was one of the first countries in the euro-zone to be heavily affected by COVID-19. On March 14, 2020, a state of emergency was declared, followed by three months of lock-down, – one of the strictest in Europe. In autumn 2020, the second wave arrived.

The measures taken to battle coronavirus transformed the city. It’s been a surprising experience to witness these changes unfold. No crowds, no car noise – only the sound of birds and sirens. The economic impact was also severe.

This photography project is a visual record of the turbulent and unprecedented Covid-19 times in Barcelona, photographed in 2020 and 2021. The city and businesses, people adjusting to the “new normality”, balancing between the fear of infection with the need to live, make money, connect. A process of discovering what officials called the “new normal”.
